Earthenware Storage Jar-BIOT
Marvellous French handmade BIOT clay jar, named after the medieval town of Biot in Provence, Southern France.
Made from the 16th century until the 19th century, and known for their rustic appearance, raw sand-coloured bases, and often a characteristic green or yellow glaze running down the sides from the rim.
The large jars were originally used to store and mature olive oil. They also served as secure containers for dry goods, grains and salted foods, because the clay kept the contents stable and protected from pests.
The jars were vital to Provençal agriculture and trade from the Middle Ages unti the 19th century.
Today, antique Biot jars are used as elements in homes, orangeries and terraces, often planted with olive trees, citrus trees or as sculptural objects in any space.
