Coffee Table – R. Goossens
Handsome and marvellous vintage coffee table (Coco Chanel Table) from around the late 1960s – early 1970s, designed by Robert Goossens.
Sophisticated and elegantly shaped with a gilt base depicted a wheat sheaf and ears of corn.
The branches support a thick oval glass plate, whose transparent lightness allows a look down to the beautifully ornamental frame.
Robert Goossens (1927-2016) was a jeweler-goldsmith trained in workshops with clients such as Cartier. He became an independent craftsman and in the 1950s began creating jewellery for Gabrielle Coco Chanel. He also worked for other famous fashion brands, such as Hermes, Dior, Balenciaga and others.
For Coco Chanel he not only made jewellery, but also furniture, mirrors, and chandeliers. He created a fantastic register of forms that impressed decorative art from the 1960s-1970s, such as the table with wheat ears, a recurring pattern that Coco Chanel so greatly appreciated.
